Chapter Ten

Nearly forty-five minutes ticked by before Trevor came back to the table. I’d been tempted to go wander around and see the place for myself, but decided against it. The whole situation was starting to give me Alice in Wonderland vibes, and not in the wonky, fun Disney way. The guy who’d spotted Flapjack hadn’t returned with some kind of ghost-busting force, so I figured we were safe, at least for the time being.

Trevor dropped back into his original seat and raked a hand through his hair, his eyes distracted.

“Well?” I prompted, trying to keep my general impatience out of my voice.

“I asked around. Everyone is sticking with the same story. Tess got fired last week. Some people think it was a jealousy thing. Tess is a pretty girl, and Cisco noticed. Some people say that’s why he agreed to let her work off the debt in the first place. Anyone else, he probably would have roughed them up a little and demanded they find a way to get the cash.”

My nose wrinkled. “Sounds like a real winner.”

Trevor grimaced. “Yeah.”

“So, you do know about the debt then,” I said. “Back at the coffee shop, I wasn’t sure.”

“It’s like I said, after she got caught red-handed swiping that wallet, she broke down and told me. She said her dad racked up a crazy expensive bill, and some guy with a gun came to collect a few weeks after her old man kicked it.”

“And she was working here to pay it back,” I added.

Trevor nodded. “Well, at least, at first.”

“What do you mean?”

Trevor met my gaze. “If she was so in debt to Cisco, and working two jobs, and trying to go to school, how was she able to buy all of those designer clothes and fancy purses? I don’t know much about handbags, but some of the girls at Cuppa said the one she carried had a resale value of five thousand dollars. How does a college student afford that on a retail salary? And why would she drop that kind of cash on a bag, when she could use it to get herself out of here?”

“Unless she wasn’t trying to get out from under the debt,” I said, connecting the dots as Trevor arranged them. “Maybe she’d already paid off what she owed, and now she was just here because she liked it. When did she steal that wallet?”

Trevor shrugged. “I don’t know. I haven’t worked at Cuppa in over a year, so it’s been at least that long.”

I recalled a detail that Lydia had shared, about Tessa going to Cisco’s house after working a shift. Had she said it was two weeks ago? So, a week before she got the ax? Maybe the girlfriend found out that Cisco was stepping out on her, and him letting Tessa go was a way to salvage the relationship.

“Trevor, do you think there is any truth to the rumors of her being with Cisco?”

“I never saw anything. At least, not from her. He would stare at her, make comments.
